Quarrying

Quarrying is the process of extracting rock, sand, gravel, or other minerals from the ground for the production of building materials or other uses. A quarry is a workplace where minerals are extracted from the surface of the earth. Quarries are also known by other names around the world: "surface mines", "pits", "open pit mines" , the largest quantities of minerals extracted in quarries are used in the construction industry.

What is the difference between a mine and a quarry?

The term `quarry' is usually associated with a place where natural stone is mined to produce building stone or dimension stone, and the name is thought to derive from the Latin word `quadraria', which describes such a place. The soil mined in a quarry will be softer than normal quarrying land. The term "mining" is similarly associated with places where minerals are extracted to produce metals or coal.
